Great Skin Care

Five Steps to Looking Like You Get Eight Hours of Sleep

Midnight feedings, second jobs, late night with the girls, even insomnia. There are more things today we must deal with that break up our sleep than there ever were before. Experts tell us we should get eight hours of sleep every night, but for most of us, that's simply not possible. There is a way, however, to look like you get eight hours of sleep a night, even when you don't. How? Great skin care. If you consistently follow these five steps twice a day, once in the morning, once at bedtime, your face will sport a healthy, dewy glow that will have people wondering how you manage to do it and get eight hours of a sleep a night.

No matter how bad your complexion may be, never use a cleanser that makes your skin turn red. Destroying or damaging skins cells does not make for cleaner skin. A lotion-based cleanser is best for all skin types. It cleans thoroughly without drying out or damaging skin cells. If your skin has special needs, like overly oily or dry, this is the step to take care of it. For dry skin, find a cleanser with an extra moisturizer. For oily skin, use a cleanser with an oil fighter.

Exfoliate. Part of what you clean off your face every day is dead skins cells. These dead cells can clog pores and cause pimples or blackheads. Your foundation will also stick to dead skin cells, making it look cakey and fake. Again, you don't want to be overly harsh with your skin. A gentle scrubbing mask or even a cleanser with exfoliating beads would be best.

Tone. Just like the rest of our body, our skin needs to be toned to stay in shape. Over time, the elasticity of our skin weakens, causing sagginess and the dreaded wrinkles. Toning skin also helps to keep pores smaller. The larger the pores, the more space there is for dirt, make-up and dead skin cells to get into, clogging the pores and causing pimples. A gentle, everyday toner will keep your skin elastic and fresh, minimizing pores and minimizing wrinkles. Out of the five steps, this is the one most often skipped, but this step lays the groundwork for beautiful skin. It preps the canvas, so to speak, for make-up to set up better and for moisturizer to fully absorb into the skin.

Moisturize. Even people with oily skin need a moisturizer. Our skin relies on moisture for that soft, dewy look. Skin that is dry wrinkles more easily and earlier than skin that has been properly moisturized. Look for a moisturizer that sinks into both layers of skin, the dermis and the epidermis. The best moisturizer will hydrate for up to 10-12 hours. If your skin is oily, look for an oil-free, lightweight moisturize that won't cause clogging. If your skin is excessively dry, you may need an additional, heavy duty moisturizer that you can apply a couple of times a week, more often during the dry winter months.

Protect. After cleaning and prepping the face, protect it. First, always wear a sunscreen. Some moisturizers come with sunscreen already in them. If yours doesn't, apply a light coating of a sunscreen with at least an SPF of 15. Even your daily commute can expose you to enough harmful UV rays to cause skin damage, wrinkles, and even skin cancer. After the sun screen has dried, apply your foundation. Foundation, whether liquid or powder, acts as a kind of wall to protect your skin from dirt, pollutants, skin cells, and oil from sweat.

Dark Circles. If you've had a particularly rough night, and your normal skin care routine is not helping to cover the dark circles, try these tips. Apply concealor that is one shade darker than your foundation under your eyes. It may seem counterproductive to cover something dark with a dark shade, but in cosmetics, light colors draws attention while dark colors conceal. Also, do not apply any eyeliner or mascara to the bottom lids and lashes. They'll create a kind of shadow effect that will emphasize your dark circles.
