Revealing Fashions: How Much is Too Much? (2)

<< PREVIOUS PAGE

Clothing was designed to enhance the full bosom, a narrow waist, and a shapelier figure in general. Many women - feeling shortchanged by nature, and pressured by the images seen on television and in movies - sought padded foundation garments to enhance what they had and cosmetic surgery to create what nature never gave them. The ideal figure was one that few could hope to attain without surgical assistance.
These days there seems to be a revolutionary movement toward "real women, with real beauty". The unrealistic ideals of breast size and every woman struggling to reach size "0" are being shoved aside in favor of learning to accept what you have and make the most of it. Diversity is the new watchword. Even so, men are still attracted to women's chests, legs and figures, and there is still a long way to go before the "Barbie doll" ideal is overcome.

Standards of Today:
While today's fashion stresses individualism, there are some rules that should be applied to the choices women make concerning the clothes they wear. Clothing that is "too revealing" for some women are "fun and frivolous" for others. We won't get into the moral objections some women have to revealing clothes, because those women won't need to consider whether something is too revealing. However, we will discuss guidelines for helping women look good, feel sexy, and be comfortable with the choices they make.

Body Type:
I want to be very honest here. I happen to think that a woman's size has no bearing on her beauty. I've met large women who were breathtakingly beautiful, and I've met women with hourglass figures who were unimaginably plain. However, on the whole, larger-sized women should be careful when dressing in revealing clothes. Low-cut and tight-fitting clothing tends to exacerbate the appearance that their clothing is ill-fitted.
But the problem isn't restricted to overweight women. A woman should never try to look as though she's "squeezed" into her clothing. The effect is never sexy. I've seen far too many wonderfully-proportioned women whose skin bulged above the waist of their jeans because they believed that tight jeans were sexy. And when coupled with the current popularity of middle-revealing tops, the look is doubly unappealing.

The Fallacy of "Less Is More":
When is comes to dressing in a sexy manner, many women are of the opinion that "Less Is More", meaning that the less of their body is covered, the more sexy an outfit is. There is a clear difference between looking 'sexy' and looking like the next act at the local strip club. What most women fail to realize is that from a purely esthetic point of view, you want to create an area of focus in the way you dress.
The objective is to showcase what you feel is your best feature. If you have shapely legs, then select a dress or skirt to show off your legs, if you have nice breasts then wear a blouse or dress that displays your décolletage to best advantage. Or perhaps you're thin and lean - maybe athletic - a sleeveless or backless dress that shows off your toned arms and slender neck is called for.
What you should never do is try to show too much at once. Choose one feature to focus on and stop there. Even if you have the ideal figure, an outfit the displays your cleavage, your narrow waist, and shapely legs will only serve to diffuse the attention of the viewer. In a worst case, it can even leave you looking cheap and give the wrong impression about you.
There is an exception to this rule, and you will find it listed below in the section marked "Suiting 'Sexy' to the Occasion".
