Breast Augmentation
Q: Are breast implants expensive?
A: According to the most current research, the cost of breast augmentation surgery / implantation surgery ranges from $4,000 to $10,000
(U.S. dollars). The cost varies greatly based on the region of the U.S. or the province and area of the countries in which the procedure
is to be performed. In the U.S., the average cost is estimated at $3700. My own research into the subject found a number of clinics and
physicians offering the service for $2500 in certain areas of the U.S.
However, there are some important factors you need to consider before you decide on breast
implants and the doctor who will perform the implantation surgery:
The type of implants to be used is an important topic to consider. While in many countries,
silicone-gel implants are readily used, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved these types of implants for use in
augmentation surgery. Currently, the only breast implant type approved in the United States for use in augmentation surgery is
saline-filled implants.
The physician/surgeon who will be performing the implantation surgery needs to be certified
by whatever medical review organization governs surgeons in your country of residence. Furthermore, you should look for additional
accreditation that provides verification of the surgeon’s credentials. In the U.S., a physician who will be performing surgery needs
to be certified by the American Medical Association, and preferably by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons.
These surgical procedures are best performed in hospital settings or outpatient surgical
clinics. Because the procedures involve anaesthetics and complications are a real possibility, it is always advised that there be
adequate facilities for handling any emergencies that may arise. There are doctors who offer these procedures in their offices. Be
cautious and investigate the facilities fully (including checking with local and regional authorities to make certain performing such
surgical procedures in an office setting is legal in the country/region in which you live).
You should also make certain that you are aware of the more common potential complications
and risks associated with the particular procedures you are looking into as well as the products that will be used. Be sure that you
stay informed and look out for signs of these complications in the after-surgery phase of your recovery.
