Straighten Hair

Q: I’m a male with a very strong black curly hair. One day I decided to give the curls a break, so I had a chemical process in which my hair, after two sessions – 3 months gap - had gone completely flat. I’ve tried to find the adequate English word for this process. In Portuguese the word is “Desfrizar”. The problem after this process is that I can’t let the hair without any product after the shower. The hair is completely dry and gets curly again. I generally use special products for washing the hair (Sebastian Line). Well, I can live with the “always put something on your hair after shower” term, but the thing is: Will it bring future problems? Will this cause hair fall, baldness? By the way, is there any special product to make my hair flat without having that wet look? What special cares do I must take for this kind of chemical process?

A: This should not cause hair loss in the sense of conventional baldness where the hair reverts from terminal hair to vellus hair, but it may result in breakage if the hair isn’t cared for properly and is allowed to become too dry and brittle. You don’t mention the products you use to condition the hair, and I want to encourage you to be sure and condition the hair every day, even when you don’t shampoo.

If you want to straighten your hair without having the wet look, you might consider using a flat iron to smooth and straighten the hair. This will allow you to have a straight hair style, without the need for a wet look. Just be sure to keep the hair conditioned to protect from heat styling damage.

As for the particular process you have had, and how to properly care for it afterward, you need to make sure you speak to the stylist who performed the service for you. There may be specific products and procedures you need to follow to ensure that the salon will guarantee the results of the process.
