Wrinkles Around Eyes

Eye with wrinkles around it

Q: I’m starting to get wrinkles around my eyes. What can I do?

A: As we age, our skin loses collagen and elastin which is what gives our skin is texture and resilience. Furthermore, the skin produces less of these elements as we grow older, which slowly results in the development of wrinkles, and can slow the skin’s ability to heal and repair itself.

The best and least invasive way to treat the formation of wrinkles is first of all to moisturize. Moisturizers will hydrate the skin and plump up the wrinkles to minimize their appearance. You can also find many new products available which are designed to boost the formation of collagen and elastin. This will help to further reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles and help the skin to repair itself to a more youthful appearance.

There are also procedures that can be performed by your dermatologist – such as chemical peels and laser therapy – which destroy and remove the older, upper dermal layers to reveal the newer skin below. These are generally more expensive (particularly in the case of laser therapies) and can be uncomfortable, since they involve the use of acids and laser light to burn away the upper dermal layers.
