Uneven Skin Tone

Moisturizer

Q: I am African-American and my skin tone is uneven. What should I do? How can I fix this? I have blotches of darker skin on my face where the sun hits the most how can I lighten them?

A: Well, the first thing you need to do is make sure to begin using a moisturizer with a sunscreen every day to help prevent a worsening of the unevenness.

As to lightening the darker skin, there is only so much to be done via over-the-counter methods. There are creams and lotions that claim to help even skin tone by lightening over-pigmented areas, but these products generally produce only slight results at best.

For the most effective products and treatments, you will need to speak with a dermatologist/cosmetic surgeon about prescription treatments to lighten overly-pigmented skin or other treatments such as chemical peels and laser therapy to help restore a more even skin tone.

When you start exploring the more excessive options for treating this situation, you will need to consider the cost versus the benefit and determine whether you feel the results are worthwhile.
